Purchase Gold Coins And Start An Investment

Procedures On How You Can Purchase Gold Coins And Start An Investment

Many people are buying gold coins these days. The reasons for this vary. Some people buy gold coins to make an investment. That's a good idea because it protects your portfolio in today's turbulent economy.

Another reason why people purchase gold coins is because gold goes up in value. Gold appreciates, and the demand for rare gold coins is quite avid among collectors.

Buying gold coins is a solid investment plan. Regardless of why someone is buying the coins, it actually works as an investment. You can buy gold and feel safe that your investment won't lose value.

Many people who are thinking about buying gold want to make this wise choice but don't know how to start. The first thing to do is to find the right dealer. Find an honest, reputable dealer who is a member of one of the two major gold organizations. That way you can be sure you won't be buying counterfeit gold.

When you have your dealer chosen, figure out how much gold to buy. The price of gold does fluctuate. You want to find out how much gold you will buy at a given price, this locks the price in at that amount obviously.

There is a possible down side to buying gold coins of course. If you pick the wrong dealer, you can be overcharged for your purchase. Being cheated is very unpleasant. Pick a good dealer to avoid this.

Bear in mind that you are not going to be able to buy the gold at the true market value though. A dealer has to make some money - they have to make profit. If they have no profit, there's really no way for them to stay in business.

Do you want to make the most of your investment dollar and make a wise and safe purchase? Then do some research and know the true market value of the coins that you intend to purchase, before you go to make your deal.

Double Eagle Gold Coin

The Double Eagle Gold Coin of the United States with a denomination of $20. The coins contained 0.9675 troy oz and was 90% 0.900 fine plus 20% copper alloy.

The eagle name for U.S. Gold coinage is mistakenly assumed to be nicknamed eagle. But by an Act of Congress the name Eagle, Half Eagle, Quarter Eagle and Double Eagle was authorized in title and section 1 March 3, 1849.

The California Gold Rush coincided with the first Double Eagle minted in 1849. You will also find two pieces in proof which reside one in the Smithsonian Institution and the other was presented to the Treasury Secretary William M. Meredith. Later the proof Double Eagle gold coin sold as part of his estate and its location is unknown today.

By 1850 the regular production began which ran all the way to 1933 when the Gold Reserve Act changed the price of gold to $35 an oz. Before 1850 the denomination of the eagle was $10 dollars. The $10 dollar eagle was produced at the beginning of 1975. Later when the $20 dollar gold piece came out having the twice the value the new coins were named Double Eagles.

Liberty Head Eagle $10 GOLD Coin

Liberty Head Eagle GOLD Coin

The United States Mint used the eagle as a base unit of denomination for the issue of gold coinage. The circulation of gold coinage stopped in 1933 when it became obsolete. The denomination designation was broken down into four base units. They were the Cent the dime and the dollar was 10 cents, the dollar was ten dimes and the eagle is 10 dollars.

1933 Gold Withdrawn From Circulation

The eagle is a base-unit of denomination issued only for gold coinage by the United States Mint. It has been obsolete as a circulating denomination since 1933. The eagle was the largest of the four main decimal base-units of denomination used for circulating coinage in the United States prior to 1933, the year when gold was withdrawn from circulation. These four main base-units of denomination were the cent, the dime, the dollar, and the eagle, where a dime is 10 cents, a dollar is 10 dimes, and an eagle is 10 dollars. The eagle base-unit of denomination served as the basis of the gold quarter-eagle, the gold half-eagle, the eagle, and the double-eagle coins.

With the exceptions of the gold dollar coin, the gold three-dollar coin, the three-cent nickel, and the five-cent nickel, the unit of denomination of coinage prior to 1933 was linked to the precious or semi-precious metal that comprised a majority of the alloy used in that coin. In this regard the United States followed long-standing British and European practice of different base-unit denominations for different precious and semi-precious metals. In the United States, the Cent was the base-unit of denomination in copper. The dime and dollar were the base-units of denomination in silver. The eagle was the base-unit of denomination in gold.

Quarter eagles were issued for circulation by the United States Mint from 1796 until 1929; half eagles from 1795 until 1929; eagles from 1795 to 1933; and double eagles from 1850 to 1933, although for each of these ranges of years there were occasional gaps in production.

Starting in 1984, the United States Mint at West Point has issued eagles, with the pre-1933 weight, size, and composition, to the general public as commemoratives. These eagles, like the 1/4 ounce American eagle gold bullion coins denominated as $10 (see below), are technically legal tender but do not circulate as such since their value is considerably greater.

Originally the purity of all circulating gold coins in the United States was 22 karats. The weight of quarter eagles was 67.5 troy grains; of half eagles 135 troy grains of eagles 270 troy grains.

American Bald Eagle Returns as High Flying Commemoratives

Three Coins Honoring the American Bald Eagle for 2008

The three coins consisted of a copper nickel “clad” half dollar and the prize 5 dollar gold piece. The three coins were issued to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the endangered species act of 1973. If you remember back that far it was to help restore the bald eagle from the brink of extinction.

The American Eagle Foundation or (AEF) a nonprofit organization’s goal was to try to educate our congressmen about the endangered bald eagles. In 2004 congress authorized the coins their campaign proved the bald eagle was effective as a Capitol Hill lobbyist but a very effective icon.
Back in December 2007 the U.S. Mint presented the designs for the 3 new coins. All are now struck in proof and uncirculated versions.

The back of the 5 dollar gold piece presents 3 young eagles on a branch. On the front side has the Great Seal of the United States as it was engraved back in 1903. The back side of the silver dollar has an adult eagle soaring in the sky. On the front of the silver dollar presents a replica of the Great Seal of the United States that was used back between 1782 and 1841. The back side of the half dollar presents baby eagles only a few days old in their nest with another egg.  The very eagle that visited Capital for the original AEF presentation appears on the front side of the half dollar.

The same eagle is famous and makes a lot of educational visits around the country since 1993. Its name is Challenger in honor of the brave crew of the Challenger disaster.

Back in 2004 more than 40 U.S. Senators got to meet Challenger presented by the AEF and more than 70 senators agreed to support the new coin bill by signing on as co-sponsors.

The release of the three coins also commemorates the removal of the bald eagle from the endangered list. The bald eagle was picked as the symbol of the United States back in 1782 and there were as many as 100,000 nesting eagles around the country. In 1963 the population had dropped to as low as 417 breeding pairs. Much thanks to the AEF and conservation that number is now up to over 10,000 breeding pairs in the lower 48 states.

Why the commemoratives are such a prize collectable has to do with the numbers minted. The 5 dollar gold pieces are only 100,000. The silver half dollar has 500,000 and 750,000 of the “clad” half dollars.
These fantastic coins are a big prize for any coin collection because they represent American Freedom, democracy, courage and strength.
