Collecting the 50 State Quarters
The 50 State Quarter Program
It was started to educate the nation about each state’s history. The other major goal was to reach beyond the numismatic crowd and get the general public interested in the designs and start collecting the new quarters.
The gamble worked and was a huge success. To date at the last count the program has sold 2.8 billion over and about the normal quarter coin market.
Once known as the “hobby of kings” is now the “king of hobbies”.
Everyone is involved young and old and even many in foreign countries people have gotten hooked on the new 50 new quarters from America and have started collections.
Numismatists, coin collectors love to collect the quarters. But they do not hold a match for the numismatic novices who have take up the hobby with a vengeance.
The 50 state quarters has proven to be the best place for the novice to start the hobby. The reason for this is they can be collected so many different ways.
You can select and collect them right from circulation. The last state quarter released for Hawaii the last state to join the Union making 50 American states.
All 50 are now in circulation so you can start collecting them.
Here’s what one of the owners had to say about the 50-Coin Set 1999-2008 D Complete UNC:
I ordered the D mint series set. Every coin but one was in excellent condition. The one coin was a P mint. I contacted the seller and, I'm not kidding, I was contacted within minutes!! Three days later I received a beautiful replacement coin. (Deborah Dodge)
How the 50 State Quarter Program Started
Back in 1999 every 10 weeks a new quarter representing a state was released in the order in which the state joined the Union. It ran through 2008 and is now completed. A completed collection would have 100 quarters. You say why 100? Well there are 2 mint marks for the quarters D for the Denver mint and P for the Philadelphia mint.
There is Another 100 Proof Sets Also
They consist of clad Proof made of copper and a silver proof both carry the “S” for the San Francisco Mint. These you will not find in circulation they only come from the U.S. Mint www.USMINT.gov . Today most of the dealers buy and sell them to collectors. There are a large number of online stores and auction where you can begin your collections.
Two Other Sets for Your Collection are Available
You can collect the gold plated set in both the P & D mint marks. There is also another set that you can collect that are a painted set. Both come from dealers or are auctioned off. So you can add 200 more quarters to your collection.
Here’s what one of the owners had to say about the 50-Coin Set 1999-2008 P Complete UNC:
I have purchased four to six of these sets and these are not as shiny as some previous sets, but overall very good quality and probably will get a couple more sets from this company. They are easy to work with and resolve any issues rapidly and work hard (my opinion) to make you happy. Thanks! (Jimmy Shaw)
Great News for Collectors
The 50 State Quarter Program is extended for another year. There will be 6 different quarters this year. Washington DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, Samoa, Virgin Islands and Mariana Islands will be the 6 new quarters for 2009. This means you will need the new folder to keep the new 12 in for both mint marks P & D. There will be proof set available from the U.S. Mint also. Until the dealers get them in.
